Media Stockade works on Netflix film The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari

In 2019, 47 tourists and guides were trapped when New Zealand volcano Whakaari erupted. We helped bring their story of resilience to the world in a new documentary.

In 2023, Media Stockade was selected to research and field-produce some of the Australian-based elements for the new production The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari. The film explores what happened when a volcanic eruption shattered a tourist expedition out on a remote island.

Minute-by-minute footage and personal accounts give testimony to the tragedy, which claimed 22 lives.

Media Stockade producer Rebecca Barry says: ‘Filming with Australian survivor Jesse Langford was powerful. His extraordinary story of survival and resilience will stay with us all for a long time.’

The film was produced in collaboration with Imagine Entertainment, Imagine Docs, and Moxie Film.

‘It was an honour working with the Imagine production team. Director Rory Kennedy and producer Dallas Brennan Rexer did an incredible job bringing this story into focus.’

And, of course, we’d like to give a shoutout to our fantastic Australian team Merran Lang, Dora Louise Weekley, Sophie Wiesner, Justine Kerrigan, James Ward-Miller, Shane Munroe, Isabelle Stone, and Petrice Graham.

You can watch The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari now on Netflix.
